The Low GI Diet

Low GI Diet

Low GI Diet

Eating a low GI diet is easier than you realise and the most important aspect to remember is to be clever with the choice carbohydrates you choose.

Just by replacing the highly refined carbohydrates like white bread, crisp puffed cereals and sugary snacks to the less processed carbohydrates like grain bread, fruit and vegetables, legumes and pasta will allow your body to get the food that it was designed for.

With a low GI diet you will achieve the following:

*  You will feel better
*  You won’t go hungry
*  You will have more energy, and
*  You’ll look so much better

To achieve this, you don’t have to be on a strict low GI diet only, if you just introduce it a little at a time and then add to it, as you feel comfortable. There are no hard and fast rules to be on a low GI diet only, in fact it is probably better to mix and match to suit your body’s requirements.

Following are a few tips for a healthy low GI diet that can be easily adapted:

•    Eat on a regular basis, try to eat at the same time each day
•    Try eating at least seven servings of fruit and vegetables each day
•    Add legumes to your diet, these can include beans, lentils and chickpeas
•    Add low fat dairy foods to your diet, soy products that are calcium enriched are beneficial
•    Add a low GI version of breads and cereals to your diet
•    Add nuts on a regular basis
•    Add omega-3 fats to your diet which include fish and seafood
•    Make sure you choose meat that is lean
•    Reduce your salt intake, and
•    Limit the amount of alcohol you drink

Remember that a low GI diet is a lot easier to follow than one of those many nutritional programs that you can get.

It’s just a matter of substituting a high GI food with a low GI food. Each time you prepare a meal, think about what foods you are using and could it be substituted for something that is more nutritious and beneficial, for example, use a grain bread instead of white bread, use fruit instead of biscuits, use muesli instead of cornflakes, and use sweet potato instead of potato.

Being a diabetic, your diet is vital to your overall well-being, so by substituting high GI foods with low GI foods and alternatives you will give your diet a lower GI and you will get all the benefits of eating a low GI diet.
